Rod Wood 50 Years In Broadcasting
When Rod Wood came out of the US Army in 1963, his buddies
told him he ought to be a DJ.  But a smart radio manager gave
him different advice… and that advice paid off.  Instead of
spinning records, Rod read the news.  And 50 years later, he’s
still doing it.
On October 22nd, Rod marked his golden anniversary as a
broadcaster.  And “the Dean of Central New York Broadcasters”
hometown, Syracuse.

That career started in 1963, at some of Syracuse’s top AM
stations of the era:  WOLF, WNDR, and finally WHEN AM & TV.
That’s where Rod got his on-camera start in the late ‘60’s as
weekend news anchor.  He stayed at WHEN for 10 years.

In 1976, Syracuse’s ABC affiliate started a long climb out of the
ratings cellar by hiring talent from the competition.  One of their
first moves was to put Rod behind the anchor desk.  He’s been
a Central New York icon ever since… and a proud member of
NABET-CWA Local 211 for 37 years.

Today, Rod anchors NewsChannel 9 WSYR’s signature
newscasts at 5:00, 5:30, 6:00 & 11:00pm.    For more than 25
years, he’s shared early evening anchor duties with Carrie
Lazarus.  The pair is one of the longest-running anchor teams
in the nation, and they were inducted together into the New
York State Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2011.

Rod and his wife Nanette raised their family of five in Syracuse,
and now have seven grandchildren.  He is a former president of
the Syracuse Press Club, and was honored on the organization’
s Wall of Distinction in 2001… just one of many accolades in a
career that’s still going strong after 50 years.
